North Side Housing and Supportive Services (NSHSS) opened its doors in Rogers Park with the help of a new DOH grant program and unyielding perseverance among many project partners. This adaptive reuse project transformed a defunct medical office into a reimagined, non-congregate men’s shelter. Our architectural partner, Gensler, created a space that fosters calm, healing, and a true sense of home, while our client partners envisioned a model focused on long-term stability and empowerment for its residents. Every detail was thoughtfully crafted through trauma-informed design. The project faced numerous challenges including demolition surprises and tight schedules, ensuring shelter before the holidays and harsh winter conditions. The outcome was a huge success for all involved.
The completed shelter offers 70 double-occupancy beds, wraparound support services, a commercial kitchen, common spaces, and case management offices. Widely featured in local media, NSHSS stands as a transformative model for dignified supportive housing in Chicago, empowering men to move forward in meaningful and sustainable ways.
